Plan Now to Hire Temporary Holiday Season Workers
The busy holiday season is fast approaching, and with unemployment rates low and temporary worker demand high, finding qualified temporary help may be challenging this year. The National Retail Federation estimates that retailers will hire between 530,000 and 590,000 seasonal workers this year. Notably, as the retail business model evolves due to consumer preferences and new technologies, tracking seasonal hiring becomes more complicated as retailers hire not only seasonal store workers but also temporary workers for their warehouses, call centers, company headquarters and transportation departments.
Employers should start recruiting temporary workers early in the season and create a recruitment strategy to attract top talent. Hiring workers early allows employers more time to build a relationship with them and find out the additional perks top talent may want. Although money is usually the biggest incentive, companies have discovered that discounts and special shopping days may attract workers. One company found its employee discount was the main reason temporary workers chose to work for them — over compensation or the promise of a full-time position, according to a recent HR Dive article.
Your best plan to find qualified candidates is to know what you’re looking for. You’ll need to have a clear job description and you need to get it in front of potential applicants. Many online job boards allow you to post your job advertisement, but employers pay an average of $300 per posting to advertise a job opening for 30 days — posting one open position into two additional job boards can cost as much as $1,200.
