HR Boot Camp

First up is the final virtual HR Boot Camp seminar of the year, which consists of two half-day sessions that take place online on Thursday, September 12, and Friday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you’re new to HR — or just want to update your HR skills and knowledge — CalChamber’s employment law experts will, in our forum-style, interactive sessions, explore California’s intricate and complicated employment laws and how they affect the workplace. Topics include:

  • Hiring;
  • Common wage-and-hour issues;
  • Meal and rest break requirements;
  • Paid sick leave;
  • Vacation and holiday pay;
  • Discrimination and harassment;
  • Discipline and termination; and
  • Many more.

Participants can submit questions via Zoom during the virtual seminar, and they will receive downloadable slides and supplemental training materials.

Please note that no recording will be associated with this virtual seminar so be sure to attend the live training.

Sick Leave, Vacation, PTO: What California Employers Need to Know

Up next is our Sick Leave, Vacation, PTO live webinar, during which CalChamber’s employment law experts will discuss the differences among these forms of time off, as navigating them can be tricky.

Why is that? Because while providing sick leave in California is mandatory, offering other forms of paid time — such as vacation and personal time — is not required. But employers who choose to offer them often ask whether they must follow any rules when doing so. And for those that combine vacation time, mandatory sick time and personal time into a single bank of days for employees to use at their discretion (often referred to as paid time off or PTO), what should they consider?

Whether offering separate vacation and sick leave banks, or offering a broader, single PTO bank, employers must be aware of specific California requirements. Topics in this 90-minute webinar include:

  • Mandatory California paid sick leave requirements.
  • Vacation policies, including caps on accrual, required usage and cash-out plans.
  • All-inclusive PTO plans.
  • Flexible or unlimited time off policies.

Registrants will receive downloadable webinar slides and a recording of the live September 19, 2024, event.

Supervisor Essentials

The last two September trainings are specific to supervisors within an organization.

Supervisors are a vital aspect of maintaining effective and efficient operations; they bring specialized knowledge to manage their units and act as the “eyes and ears” of what’s happening with your workforce. Their support is invaluable — but their enhanced roles may result in compliance concerns if they’re not properly trained on managing a California workforce.

Additionally, the new (PAGA) reform, which provides relief to employers for wage and hour claims, strongly encourages employers to train their supervisors specifically on California wage and hour compliance issues they may encounter while supervising employees.

Our one-hour Supervisor Essentials: Wage and Hour training is a critical step towards mitigating potential PAGA penalties while those seeking broader supervisor training can attend our 3.5-hour Supervisor Essentials: Workplace Compliance which covers the entire employment lifecycle, including the crucial wage and hour segment. Plus, you can save 10 percent when you purchase five or more seats!

Supervisor Essentials: Wage and Hour

In the Supervisor Essentials: Wage and Hour course, CalChamber’s employment law experts have tailored a practical wage and hour training specifically to subjects that supervisors will encounter, including:

  • Understanding current timekeeping requirements;
  • Eliminating off-the-clock work;
  • Providing compliant meal and rest breaks; and
  • Handling paid sick leave requests.

Attendees will also deepen their understanding on legal compliance through the real-life, practical scenarios shared in the course.

Participants can submit questions via Zoom during the virtual seminar and will receive downloadable slides of the live September 27, 2024, event, which is intended for individual learners only. No recording is associated with this virtual seminar so be sure to attend the live training.

Supervisor Essentials: Workplace Compliance

In the Supervisor Essentials: Workplace Compliance seminar, CalChamber’s top employment law experts will guide supervisors through:

  • Navigating the hiring process;
  • Effective employee onboarding practices;
  • Addressing pay, scheduling, and other wage and hour issues;
  • Responding to leaves of absence and accommodation requests;
  • Ensuring compliance with workplace safety laws; and
  • Handling employee performance issues and terminations with confidence.

Supervisors who complete this course will enhance their abilities thanks to the practical tips on communication, enforcing company policies and more.

Participants can submit questions via Zoom during the virtual seminar and will receive downloadable slides of the September 26, 2024, event, which is intended for individual learners only. No recording is associated with this virtual seminar so be sure to attend the live training.
