Starting October 1, 2026, covered hotel employers in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County must ensure that each hotel worker who works as a room attendant completes at least six hours of live, interactive public housekeeping training, completes an exam and received a public housekeeping certificate within 120 days.
As previously reported, the Los Angeles County Hotel Workers Protection Ordinance took effect April 1, 2026, and requires covered hotel employers to provide workers working alone in guest rooms or restrooms with panic buttons, limit room cleaning workloads and overtime, and other requirements. They must also provide annual training on panic device use and response procedures, ensure a designated onsite responder is always available and maintain records of all device activations.
And now starting October 1, the ordinance requires hotel employers to provide annual training to employees on their rights under the ordinance, trafficking and violence awareness, disease prevention, pest detection and how to respond to possible criminal activity. Employers must keep records showing compliance with these requirements.
Because a hotel employer in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County may not employ a hotel worker as a room attendant for more than 120 days without the worker obtaining a valid public housekeeping certificate, covered hotel employers should take steps to contract with a certified public housekeeping training organization to conduct the required training and examination.
