The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released its preliminary list of the 10 most frequently cited safety and health violations for fiscal year 2016. The list was compiled from nearly 32,000 federal OSHA inspections.
One interesting fact: This list rarely changes year after year. According to OSHA, “If all employers simply corrected the top 10 hazards, we are confident the number of deaths, amputations and hospitalizations would drastically decline.” Both California and federal law require employers to provide a safe working environment for all employees.
Here is the list of the top 10 federal safety and health violations that employers need to work harder to prevent.
- Fall protection
- Hazard communication
- Respiratory protection
- Powered industrial trucks
- Machine guarding
- Electrical wiring
- Electrical, general requirements
Falls, as OSHA points out, are among the leading cause of worker deaths, especially in the construction industry. Lack of fall protection and ladder and scaffold safety issues comprise three of the 10 items on the OSHA list.
In California, the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, better known as Cal/OSHA, enforces workplace health and safety laws. California law requires employers to have an effective injury and illness prevention program (IIPP) that addresses your company’s general plan to keep the workforce free from work-related injuries and illnesses, including your plan for safety training, identification of workplace hazards and safety communication, among other items.
