Northwestern University Wins Review of Unionization Decision
In late March, HRWatchdog reported on a decision from a regional director of the National labor Relations Board (NLRB) that Northwestern University football players who received college scholarships are entitled to try to form a union because they are “employees” within the meaning of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).
But on April 24, 2014, the full NLRB announced that it granted Northwestern University’s request for a review of the decision. The NLRB stated that the university raised “substantial issues warranting review.”
The unionization election took place on April 25, 2014, according to the NLRB, but the ballots will be impounded until the full NLRB issues a decision affirming, modifying or reversing the regional director’s original decision.
